HIGHLIGHTS

Day 1

Ski Resort - Tsaghkadzor
The City of Tsaghkadzor – a small Olympic town not far from Yerevan is approximately an hour’s drive away. It is also called the Armenian Switzerland, as it is surrounded by dense mountain forests. The name of the city is referred to as “the gorge of flowers” since it is blooming with an variety of beautiful plants. According to the legend, these flowers were torn from the Pahlavuni princess’ garden and scattered over the land by the wind. It is also home to the 11th century monastic complex of Kecharis, specially built by the royals to honor the 1000th anniversary of Jesus Christ.

Tsaghkadzor is also popular for its fresh air, which is known to have indisputable health benefits. This is the main reason why the Olympic training grounds have been built in this location since the Soviet period, providing training opportunities for athletes from all over the globe after renovation. Additionally, Tsakhkadzor has become Armenia’s ski center during the winter months.

After Tsaghkadzor city we will vist Lake Sevan. After climbing a flight of stairs to the Sevan peninsula, an unforgettable panoramic view of the lake will open. Here on the top the monastery of Sevanavank is located. It was built by the princess Mariam to honor the life of her deceased husband in the 9th century. Sevanavank is also home to one of the most beautiful Amenaprkich (all savior) Khachkars of Armenia. This is one of the 13 rarest crosstones depicting Jesus.

DAY 2

Etjmiatsin City and Zvartnots Cathedral
Whilst travelling to Armenia, you may just be interested in seeing the world’s first Christian Cathedral church. Echmiadzin is considered to be the spiritual center of all Armenians all over the world! The word itself means a place where “the only begotten son of the God descended”.

You will visit the St. Hripsime church, which was built on the sepulcher of a Christian nun Hripsime who fled from the Roman Empire and was killed in Armenia. This amazing building has stood upright from the day of its construction since 618 A.D, making it one of the oldest standing churches in the world.

Five minutes drive away will be our next spot: the 7th century church of St. Gayane. Gayane was the nanny of Hripsime, and shared Hripsime’s tragic fate.

After this stop, you will be able to observe the first world’s first Christian Cathedral – the Holy Echmiadzin, built in 301-304. According to the legend, Jesus Christ descended on the same spot where the Dissention Altar stands today, where Gregory the Illuminator ordered to build the church.

On the way back to Yerevan, we will make a  stop at another beautiful 7th century temple, also included in the UNESCO heritage list. In fact, all of the churches included in the tour are listed on the UNESCO World’s Cultural Heritage Sites.

Garni Temple (77 A.D.) –  is the only standing temple in the whole post-Soviet area. Garni gracefully stands on a high plateau overlooking the Azat river gorge. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the surrounding area. You will also see the roman bath house with the mysterious mosaic, made out of 30,000 pieces of natural stones, as well as the ruins of the royal palace of 3rd century A.D.

The last stop of the tour is the monastic complex of Geghard. Translated into English as “Monastery of the Holy Lance”, it refers to the lance with which Longinus pierced Jesus. Later brought to Armenia and kept in the Geghard monastery for 5 centuries. The most astonishing part is the virtue of the architect, who cut the church right into the solid rock whilst considering all the rules of Armenian architecture.
